First Case Report of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in a Cat in Israel

چکیده
ABST RACT This case report describes a 10-year-old, 2.9 kg, female spayed Abyssinian cat diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC), unresponsive to conventional therapy. A fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) through rectal (enema) administration was performed as a last therapeutic option for the cat before euthanasia, and there was an immediate improvement after the procedure in regards to fecal texture, odor and color. After the initial successful response, the cat developed a clinical relapse of the diarrhea, and a second FMT procedure was performed five weeks thereafter. Gradually, during a 3-month period the cat started passing normal stools. On a follow-up, 11 months into the procedure, a prolonged clinical cure of the diarrhea has been achieved with the cat passing normal feces. This report describes the criteria for choosing FMT for the cat, the selection process and the screening tests performed for the fecal donor for infectious bacterial and parasitic diseases, the preparation and the methodology for the FMT and the outcome of the procedure. According to our clinical assessment, in this cat, FMT was a safe, beneficial and promising novel therapeutic procedure, and should be considered when a patient fails to respond to conventional therapy for UC. To the best of the authors’ knowledge this is the first report of FMT in a cat performed in Israel.

Introduction: The intestine, as an important part of the human gastrointestinal tract, provides a favorable milieu for the growth and development of a diverse and large population (approximately 1000 species) of bacteria. Currently, the presence of a cohesive relationship between intestinal bacteria and the host is being well studied and identified. According to the available scientific evidenc...

Background: Over the past half-century, the prevalence of obesity and related metabolic disorders such as fat disorders, cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction and stroke have increased dramatically. Various types of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, protozoan, and viruses, have evolved to live in the human gut, called microbiota. Scientists have found that thin people have a balance...

We report a case of ulcerative colitis (UC) and recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) where the patient was on immunomodulatory therapy and had successful CDI eradication after fecal transplantation. This is the first case report in the literature documenting successful C. difficile eradication in an immunosuppressed patient. We feel that fecal transplantation should be studied as a t...

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a promising strategy that involves reconstruction of gut microbiota. Recently, it has been considered as a treatment of Crohn's disease (CD) and certain neurological diseases. Here, to the best of our knowledge, we report the first case that used FMT to achieve remission of intestinal and neurological symptoms in a girl with CD and a 17-year history of ...
متن کاملWeight Gain After Fecal Microbiota Transplantation
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a promising treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. We report a case of a woman successfully treated with FMT who developed new-onset obesity after receiving stool from a healthy but overweight donor. This case may stimulate further studies on the mechanisms of the nutritional-neural-microbiota axis and reports of outcomes in patients w...
